Reuse and Recycling
Don’t throw it away -- because there is no ‘away.’ Kanata’s household waste goes to either the Trail Waste Facility Landfill or the Carp Road Facility. Capacity is running out and many items we see on Kanata curbs on garbage day – in particular larger items such as computers, TVs, and furniture – don’t have to be there.
Instead, try one of these options:

• Check out Kanata Freestore, Kanata’s very own ‘trash-to-treasure’ group on Yahoo! You can use it to give away unwanted items or request items you need. Many KEN members are using this site and it works incredibly well. Any item you offer is usually claimed and picked up in just a day or two.
• Store it until the City of Ottawa’s next Give Away Weekend. These weekend events, held in late Spring and Fall, let residents place unwanted household goods at the curb for their neighbours to pick-up for free. This year, the Spring Give Away weekend was Saturday, June 7-8. The Fall Give Away Weekend will be Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 2008.
• Take it Back to one of the 500 local retailers who accept used household items. You can take back items related to your car, garden, health, electronics, and many other household products.
• Recycle it. Details about Ottawa’s blue and black box programs at posted on the Garbage and Recycling page of the city’s website.
